Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
