EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
