Crew Member Discloses Emotional Distress Following Deluge of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is best known for her pioneering work championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the flight, including elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of space.
The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
