Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
